Make Do & Mend

‘Make Do and Mend’ was a war-time slogan. There are many lessons we can learn from this Era. I was inspired to create this notebook by the inventiveness and tales of old clothes being un-stitched and re-appropriated for whatever purpose was necessary back then. I noticed that a lot of my older Design book jackets had become warn after much use.

By creating something that is multi-functional, and that will have a second life, we can sustain an object’s use rather it becoming defunct. Once the book jacket has served its purpose, to protect the book, it can be taken apart to reveal a ‘make your own’ bag that the user puts together. The patterns are taken from cross stitch patterns from the war and the typography on the cover is created from the same idea.
