Air Mail

Up to 70% of all mailings get thrown away within seconds, and many of them don’t even get open.

Inspired by the security patterns inside an old air-mail envelope I found as part of a grandparents collection I decided to glorify envelope designs and re-use them for something positive. The book is also a reflection on the current over-use of the aircraft in diminishing CO2 levels; something we can’t reuse. At the moment aviation is completely outside the Kyoto agreements and all international and national targets.

The book of air-mail envelopes can be used to create new envelopes, note paper, or an alternative provided in the book.
A lamp shade can be created by creating 10 basic paper airplanes, as demonstrated in this book. Once attached the lampshade then illuminates a red, yellow or blue colour depending on how the lampshade was created using the book of swatches. It also creates two patterns of choice on front and back.
I wanted the book to have a gritty feel to it, so a quick drying acrylic was used for the screen-prints on patterns to give them a ‘warn’ feeling.
